Painting is an efficient and cheap option to renovate your home without expensive works. Choosing the most suitable colors and finishes becomes a key question, but not the only one.
1. Take your time to decide your goals: enlarging spaces, getting lighter rooms, enhancing a particular point of your house or a wall, etc. Once your objective is clear, choosing the paint color will become easier. For small rooms, dark colors are not recommended, while light colors will provide brightness. Blue is out of question, since it will give your rooms a relaxing atmosphere, but not a feeling of space.
2. Big pieces of furniture should be placed off-center: paint book-cases, built-in shelves or big cupboards in the same color as the walls for a neat impression, full of balance.
3. Play with contrast: paint a particular wall of a room with a more intense color to catch the attention. This contrast will create an optical illusion of space. A wall placed between two other walls painted with milder colors will seem wider.
4. Color therapy: Use the feelings that some colors evoke to get the expected results. Red may improve your mood, white may instill peace and serenity, green transmits harmony, blue is relaxing, …
5. Ceilings, preferably white: if ceilings are not very high, you can visually enlarge spaces by painting them with white. You may also get this effect by choosing a lighter color than those of the walls.
You’d rather test a paint color by applying it to an area at least a square meter in size in order to envision the final result; assess the quality and quantity of light, and if it is natural or artificial… Having all this into mind, painting will become your best ally to renew your home without effort
